Target in Emeryville, CA has LED lighting with motion controls in food display cases

I had heard of motion sensors controlling display cases before, but the Target in Emeryville, CA (which we visited this morning) has a particularly nice implementation of that technology.  The display cases are lit with LEDs (see below).

And here’s a closer shot of the motion detector:

There were motion detectors every 8-10 feet along each row, and if you started walking down the aisle the lights inside the cases came one one by one.  I suspect that motion sensors could be used with incandescent lights but the lifetimes of such bulbs are short enough to make an application like this less feasible than with LEDs, which typically last thirty times longer than incandescents.  LED lifetime is also not affected by turning them on and off (see this Wikipedia article for more details).

It took a little more than a minute for the lamps to switch off when no motion was detected, at least for the aisle I visited.  I’m not sure if delay times vary by aisle or food type.
